My name is Ash, and I am the creator of The Rainbow Toolbox. The Rainbow Toolbox is your home on the internet for all things LGBTQ+ kids. On this blog you will find everything from helpful introductory information on LGBTQ+ identities to children’s book reviews from a nonbinary perspective to peaks into my life as a nonbinary parent raising my children in a gender creative way.
A little about me and why I started this blog? Don’t mind if I do!
Ever since I was a little person, the gender labels that people put on me felt uncomfortable. I just liked what I liked and wanted to wear what I wanted to wear, and I didn’t really see what gender had to do with any of it (spoiler alert: it didn’t really, but it was a clue)! In the 1980s and 1990’s when I was growing up in rural Texas, people really didn’t know what to do with me. No one that I knew was talking about being nonbinary or transgender and being gay, lesbian, or bisexual was only talked about as something shameful in the context of my very religious community. Looking back I realized that a lot would have been different for me had I had words to describe myself, role models, and pictures of possibility. I want to make sure that teachers, parents, and communities have access to those tools for themselves and the young people in their lives.
I realize that everyone has different tools already in their toolbox. Some people have knowledge shared from friends, some have academic knowledge, and some are starting with a brand new empty toolbox. Where ever you are in your journey I hope you will find a new tool or two to take with you as you go about your days. Use these tools help nourish the children in your life and your inner child. Together let’s work toward a world of equality, equity, and justice for all LGBT+ people!
